Imagine killing someone and getting away with it. Cars kill my people and then cases often go unsolved in the US. What’s the first step in ending this?

In America, five times more bicyclists are killed by drivers than people killed in mass shootings. For reference: 1483 mass shooting deaths (defined as 4 or more willfully killed in a single incident) among all 272 incidents in 2006-2017 (not counting 417 deaths in 89 mass killing incidents by non-firearm means) = 136 deaths/year. 599 pedestrians and bicyclists killed by distracted drivers in 2017 (not counting 6161 pedestrians/bicyclists killed by “non”-distracted drivers) = 4.4x. 783 bicyclists killed (presumably mostly in collisions with cars) = 5.8x :(

Everyone knows what speed limits are and they’re enforced… but let’s be real: it’s viewed as an American right to drive as fast as you want when a police officer isn’t directly in your line of sight. I’m of the mind that it is necessary to to strip this right from drivers.

Likewise for bicycle/pedestrian collisions, there’s gotta be a systematic change. What that is… I dunno!

Imo speed limits are useless if roads are designed to accommodate higher speeds. If it feels comfortable to drive 50 mph people past a school people are gonna do that. Road diets and traffic calming please!!

Maybe bicyclist being slower than cars should stay on the side of the road and not hog the whole road. I am a bicyclist, but I also drive because I am in a remote-ish northern community. The cyclists here are kinda dicks as well.

Seems like you have information about the incident, you should call this number.

Anyone with information about the crash was asked to contact the Highland Park police at (847) 432-7730 or police@cityhpil.com.

Otherwise why do you speak about what you did not see?

I agree, it’s wise for cyclists to not block the road for no reason. On the other hand, killing them for any reason feels like a step too far.

Also, to be fair, motorists are dicks too. And there’s more of them.

Oh ya, especially when they throw drinks at you. I had that happen once when on my bike. I am not a fan of people who drive pickup trucks they are usually douche bags.

I know you’re getting downvoted but I think you’re right. I always bike on the sidewalk, even if it is illegal here. It is awkward to get out of the way for pedestrians and I do get dirty looks, but that’s better than being run over.
