I’m a heavy emoji user, texting is such a poor medium for communication, many times people get the wrong message, but with an emoji you’ll get an idea of the face I’m making, so less chance of misunderstanding

I noticed that every time I add an emoji to a comment it gets downvoted, so I tested my theory, wrote a comment without an emoji, got upvotes, went back and added an emoji, got downvotes…

On Reddit people use emojis a lot, on Lemmy I NEVER saw anyone use emojis, my account is new but still for the time I spent here, I never saw the use of emojis

So, is it just me, have you noticed this small detail ? and do you miss emojis the way I do ? 😭

There are plenty of reasons for them to type the way they did. I never said there wasn’t. I said it gives the appearance of something. It’s like they just typed whatever popped into their head without any consideration of how to convey it. Sure, I understood them, but it takes more effort than if it’s written better. It doesn’t need to be “proper” English, but presumably they’re writing for someone to read it, so the reading experience should be considered.

Emojis have their purpose. They’re there to convey emotion most of the time. They aren’t really used often to convey a concept or idea, because that’s too vague. Words are used for that. People who use emojis frequently in their posts generally are using it as a crutch that doesn’t actually help with understanding, instead it just works to add clutter.

You said you feel that people are either lazy or unknowledgeable based on how they write. I am saying that is an unsympathetic feeling to conclude based on someone’s writing.

It’s like they just typed whatever popped into their head without any consideration of how to convey it.

Your personal feeling is that this is a bad thing, I assume. I am challenging you to view it differently.

the reading experience should be considered

What about the writers experience? Why aren’t you considering them? My point is that everything you say about the writer in regards to their poor English, or thoughts not being fully fleshed out, can be interpreted differently than your initial view.

I didn’t comment on emoji use, but rather just the assumptions you made based on someone’s English. Though I understand why you mentioned it, since the thread is about Emoji use.
