Another mod sent me a link to Matrix. I gogoled the matrix.to stuff and people said it’s malware, so im cautious? Is this how everyone mods? Or is there an easier built in option on Jerboa?

Matrix is like a Fediverse thing for messaging, like a Discord or Slack… But distributed, encrypted by default, has many federated instances, etc. You’ll use it for real-time-ish messaging, presumably with the rest of the mod team.

You need to pick a client for Matrix… Kind of like how apps like Jerboa and Connect are clients for Lemmy. Element is a popular client for it, and the one I use. You should be able to go to Element, select an instance to make your account with (like you’ve done with Lemmy), and join the “room” that they sent you, which may be on another instance, but it’ll work fine anyway (also like Lemmy).

When I search “Maxtrix malware,” I get some results for a ransomware virus, which is probably true…? But unrelated to the Matrix messaging protocol.

It’s not malware. It’s just what they are using for communication and is a relatively new platform, like lemmy.

    You can safely use it.

It’s perfectly fine. It’s basically a Fediverse WhatsApp or Discord with end-to-end encryption and no need to give out your phone number. Lemmy has it built in - if you add your Matrix ID to the relevant field in your settings it causes a button to appear on your profile offering secure direct messages.

It should be handy for mod teams as you can set up a space for the community and thrash out any issues.
