    @Skooshjones@vlemmy.net did a good job of explaining it in metaphor, but I just wanted to reiterate in the straightforward context of the software itself:

    • Lemmy is the codebase - The actual software that’s running on the server(s). Anybody can go grab it and install it onto a server, if they know how: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy
    • Beehaw is one such example, where some folks created a server and installed Lemmy on it. The same is true for any other “instance.”
    • Jerboa is just an app that is used to access one or more Lemmy instances.
