I think so long as you maintain consciousness that issue is fairly null in this particular circumstance. There’s lots of tolerance for changes in thought while maintaining the same self, see many brain damage victims. So long as there is minimal change in personality, there are lots of other circumstances that have a stronger case for killing one person and having a new person replace them due to change of consciousness, imo, I don’t think most people would consider a brain damaged person killed and replaced by a new consciousness, or a drug addiction with radically altered brain chemistry, etc.

Yes, the energy of the explosion is a function of the total energy between the output of the laser and the shield, specifically the shield energy being pointed at the laser origin. That’s why they randomly hid some maximum powered, monodirectional shields facing up when they fled the attack. So that even the relatively weak personal shields would still have a large impact. In general use, the shield energy is being projected in all directions, so the amount facing the laser origin is very small. IIRC, an average powered lasgun hitting a personal shield creates an explosion that can range between roughly an HE hand grenade and an HE naval shell. They only went up like nukes because the Harkonen were using the lasguns at max energy, and the shields were tweaked abnormally. And as another comment says, the actual point of the explosion is at a random point along the beam.

Never made sense in the EU. You get yanked out of hyperspace way before you need to account for that kind of gravity. My headcanon was always that it’s just some spacer jargon we don’t have the context to parse. Like how a 12 second car is fast, even though time is not a unit of speed.

Well that’s good, because it is the least efficient walk. It’s even worse than binding your hands to your sides. It makes a kind of intuitive sense, but shocker, the way we’ve evolved to walk most comfortably is the most efficient. We swing our arms in part to reduce angular momentum. Anti-swing walk, swinging the same arm forward as the leg that is moving forward, not only fails to bleed that momentum, it adds more of it. Which we then need to spend even more energy to counter, with less efficient muscles. It’s the worst of all worlds. The only practical reasons to use it are to increase the intensity of your walks, or if you’re into some martial arts/kendo that relies on it.

I’ve read there is a lot of contention among doctors of whether you should fight a fever or not, with a lot of literature for and against it. My intuition is that, like most symptoms, it is probably best to live with it as best you can without taking meds to reducing it. But if it is causing you to have issues doing activities that will help you recover like sleeping, eating, etc, then to treat it.

Most headaches are caused by blood sugar imbalance, which in turn are often caused by changes in diet or sleep habits, and/or dehydration. If the meals help then yours may tend to be from low blood sugar.

There’s a lot of interesting ethical concerns about the Borg Collevtive. It’s easy to think of it as some big, alien, external force that erases minds and uses the bodies as flesh puppets. But that isn’t how they’re described at all. The people are all still there, that big scary intelligence is made up from merging all their minds together. Obviously, the consent issue is problematic, and we know people generally find it horrific when they are freed. But the fact is, the majority of the Hivemind apparently don’t mind, the hive mind is made up from the gestalt of the individuals, and that is the only thing keeping individuals from leaving.

As a fan of both, neither are truly Sci-fi. They both use it as dressing, but one is an action fantasy and the other is drama with emphasis on social commentary. Neither are really harder sci-fi than the other in the grand scheme of fiction. Star Wars may even be a bit better in that at least they don’t try to explain most of the tech so it can’t self contradict as much as Trek does.

What level of abstraction is enough? Training doesn’t store or reference the work at all. It derives a set of weights from it automatically. But what if you had a legion of interns manually deriving the weights and entering them in instead? Besides the impracticality of it, if I look at a picture, write down a long list of small adjustments, -2.343, -.02, +5.327, etc etc etc, and adjust the parameters of the algorithm without ever scanning it in, is that legal? If that is, does that mean the automation of that process is the illegal part?
