That is example that looking for new apps part I mentioned. I know there are FOSS Android video and proto editors. I just never needed any of them, so I don’t know which one is better or worse, but I know there are a few I have heard about in recent years. I know I have seen several contacts and dialler apps on F-Droid. Time to check them out one by one and hopefully one will fit the needs with minimal concessions. Others in this post have already mentioned some apps. See if they might work for you, too. I wish you best of luck looking for the right apps for you.

I think it is worth mentioning that there is an alternative for each one of Simple Mobile Tools apps. It will just mean we have to spend some time looking for such apps yet again. We as users of FOSS software must be always prepared to move from one application to another. This is why walled gardens, export to / import from open standard formats and in general easy replaceability of FOSS SW is important. This is just a sad fact about using FOSS where FOSS maintainers are just normal people, with all their needs, faults, and weaknesses.

That is true and might be the reason the study is successful at raising public awareness about the topic.

People are starting to comment on the topic and take notice? That is great to hear. It is not often that this happens when such a study is released. It might be that ordinary people who lack the knowledge on the subject may be able to comprehend the concerns regarding privacy in cars more readily than in other areas. Whatever the case is, I’m happy the discussion is finally happening.

I know about Trilium, but never had the incentive to try it out. Maybe I will spare some time now to have a look and investigate. The sheer number of features is astonishing. Thank you for reminding me about Trilium again.

Ad paragraph 2: The beauty is that you do not have to only enjoy it while it lasts. FLOSS cannot end in this way. As already explained by @saucyloggins@lemmy.world, if this all just conglomerates to a centralized and rotten state, you simply create another instance and federate exclusively with those instances that are not rotten. Maybe only with the smaller instances that, for example, focus on a topic you find interesting.

You do not even have to fork and maintain anything. You simply use the SW as is, but without having to deal with the aspects that you find problematic (centralization on a few large instances and rotten admins, etc.).

Welcome. Sure, Linux Mint’s WebApp Manager or Peppermint OS’s Ice are here for you. But jokes aside, sadly, no. Lemmy does not have a native Linux application as of now. But you can make use of the fact that the browser UI is a PWA which can be installed like a regular app as well.

Yes. I should have clarified. If a post does not have a body, there is nothing to expand, so the option is not visible. It will thus not help if you do not put the GIF in the post body.

Of course, you can always expand the content of any post with the book icon at the right of every post. This will show the GIF in a picture-like mode, too.

It is definitely not optimized for GIFs, like you said. But at least you can fullscreen if you want to without having to click on the post.

Yes. When I move the mouse over it, I can play the GIF, enable sounds and make it fullscreen from the feed or /c/memes, for example. But, as you said, it does not expand below the post (still in the feed).

I can see the GIF from my feed on web UI with basic play/pause buttons without a problem.

I had no idea. Never saw a GIF on Lemmy in all the years :D
