  • First, you’re part of many networks you don’t know. If they use your device to track you, they need concent, but if they use someone else’s device, they do not.

Every phone you pass within 100’ can see your broadcast, log a time and position and list of devices. Real time tracking and mapping exists today. Grocery stores use this to track and market content to you before you even check out.

You can opt out, but that may only stop you from seeing results; the devices are still tracked and logged.

But I am confused by the encryption. Gathering nearby devices and GPS location doesn’t use an owners encryption key. That would have to be encrypted after collection/processing using the owners account settings. At that stage, does it matter much?

  • I primarily use 2811’s and my first projects were very susceptible to RF noise. It took me a month to figure that one out.

Don’t use cheap-ola power supplies and wall worts from unknown past gizmos. (But even the simple Chinese metal boxes off amazon work) And by all means keep your phone away from your project. It took me ages to associate a text message to static.

And add a capacitor to filter out power noise. That was a big one for me.

Double check settings, pins, and use a level shifter if you need a signal boost. I sacrificed one LED attached straight on the board to bump the pin output from 3v to 5v.

That seemed to do it for me. Good luck!

  • It tickles me when I read of journalists protecting their privacy. You can see how far up the tree they’ve climbed.

There are many, many more ways to track that anonymous phone. These are feel-good settings to disable for that sense of false security; like you’re in control. It does have effect, don’t get me wrong.

But a big part of tracking is not what your phone sends, but other devices detect. There’s no opt out of that data collection.

Welcome to advertising tricks. My SO gets my ads because I block them too. “Blocks ads” is a data point that is tracking you around the web. They simply redirect your content to the next closest impressionable consumer. If they can’t reach you, they’ll market everywhere around you.

But this takes off doubly so this time of year. This trick really ramps up around gift giving events like The holidays, v-day, birthdays, or other life events.
