  • Yep, good eye. But also, now that we’ve seen Titan up close we know we wouldn’t be able to see any celestial bodies from the ground.

One thing that I can’t help but notice with all space art is that the parent planet is always in this horizontal orientation, which would imply that the viewer is standing on or near one of the poles (assuming the moon has a normal tilt). I can’t recall seeing a single piece with rings/gas bands vertically oriented, or even close to it. It’s always this way. Not that it looks bad, but I would love for some artist(s) to really lean into realism for their work.

Another thing to quickly mention is that some artists completely ignore the Roche limit and just throw several moons right in there, which is just silly.

Anyway I love this piece. It’s one of countless many that really captured my imagination and fostered my love for space as a child.

  • These answers are all really fun but I didn’t see anyone point out one thing: why should we assume that our creators’ “computer” architecture is anything remotely similar to our technology? I’m thinking of something like SETI—We can’t just assume that all other life is carbon-based (though evidently it’s a pretty good criterion). The simulation could be running on some kind of dark matter machine or some other exotic material that we don’t even know about.

Personally I don’t subscribe to the simulation theory. But if it were true, why would the system have any kind of limitation? I feel like if it can simulate everything from galactic superclusters down to strings vibrating in Planck Time, there are effectively no limits.

Then again, infinity is quite a monster, so what do I know?

  • I (6’5") actually sold my NA a couple of months ago. I could just fit in it and my knees were at 4:00 and 8:00 next to the wheel (not touching it at least). The only reason I sold it is because it wasn’t my daily driver and money has gotten very tight. So glad I learned to drive manual with it and then enjoy it for a few more years.

    I miss it dearly :(

Oh also it was definitely a death trap for someone of my height. That roll bar would not have saved me.
