Woo! Group trip!
Also, for anyone else like me who’s dumb and didn’t know what Diamond Dust is. I guess it’s like ice crystals glittering in the air at ground level. There’s a cool video in the Wikipedia article. Image searches just kept bringing up literal diamond dust lol.
New bucket list goal: See this.
Will add it to seeing a total eclipse and seeing the Northern Lights with cool sky phenomenon I want to see.
It definitely seems like a good idea for education services, weather services, local municipal services, and basically all important government institutions to make important announcements and updates via a service they can host themselves or is more distributed, like Mastadon, instead of via Twitter where they have to obey the whims of people like Musk.
Smaller instances are also less likely to get defederated by other instances, so unless your admins or mods are quick on the defederation, you get to see everything the fediverse has to offer. Not everyone likes that, of course, but it can be a good perk depending on the user and their admins and mods.
I also really like the idea of interest based instances. I hope we see those grow bigger rather than everything being put on .World and .ml. I need to post and comment on instances like programming.dev or ttrpg.network more.
I’m pretty sure any admin could do that with their Lemmy server, couldn’t they?
The people nodding the instance are generally different than the devs. Also, their code is open source.
Lemmy.world is biased, but in a way that’s harder to see. They’re more liberal and centrist, which isn’t political in the same way being white “isn’t”. It seems like it isn’t because it’s the default of the English speaking West.
But still, ya, lemmy.ml needs to cool it with the bans and heavy handed moderation. I’m glad it’s not the biggest anymore but now I think everything is too much on Lemmy.world. I wish people would split up their accounts and communities on more instances instead of putting it all on one (or two). This and Reddit is a great example of why we shouldn’t be giving the same people power over everything.
The problem is that someone has to host the data. That will always be true. Even in the cloud, someone has to own the servers that the data are on. The only solution I can see is something basically like what we have the fediverse, only where other instances are sharing copies of the same community and the posts on it, kind of preventing one place from having ownership of it. But then if the instance goes down or gets defederated, I suppose you’d still have different versions of it floating around, plus the problem of someone posting CSAM and it getting pushed to all the instances and stuff.
Still, I agree that I think the closest solution is going to be something like the fediverse we’re seeing now. I just don’t know how to solve the problem of overzealous mods still, because we need mods. Having some democratic control over modding seems dangerous, too. Imagine a place gets brigaded by The Donald at 3am and everyone wakes up to their community being totally different. Or sometimes people are just wrong, like we have the problem of pre October 7th where 99% of the US believed Israel was a golden angel thanks to propaganda and dismissed all criticism. Same thing with socialism in the 50’s, or racism. Democratic modding at the time would lead to MLK getting banned lol.
It’s definitely an issue, because the ml mod and mods like them are way too trigger happy on the bans, but it’ll probably take some time to think of good solutions, and lots of experimenting with new forms of social media, like the fediverse.
The more alternatives to corporation owned social media the better! I hope it takes off, but I’ve never really been a Tumblr guy.
Well you all have to hand it to them, it is a very unpopular opinion. Therefore, I upvote lol
Electric Six
I think I saw someone mention them, but I can’t find them now. They’re pretty silly, but also their songs are unironically fun to listen to as well.
People were stressed, but it also prevented them from fucking dying, so I would say worth it. Also, you really missed the point of OP’s post. This is thread is supposed to be filled with positive stuff. Everyone already knows the pandemic sucked.
Well I don’t agree. Does that mean I should uovote you?
Ya I don’t think Degrassi was ever on Nickelodeon. If you’re thinking of Drake Bell, then no, they are definitely two different people lol. Both got into music, though, although in different genres (one did rap, the other rock or something). And like the other replier mentioned, I think both got into trouble for sliding into the DM’s of minors.
Yup I’ve been seeing it everywhere in YouTube comments and other social media, too.
Haha I guess so
Well that escalated quickly…
Use lemmyverse.net to find interesting communities and instances.
There are a couple of communities focused in finding other communities, like
!communitypromo@lemmy.ca
!newcommunities@lemmy.world
!trendingcommunities@feddit.nl
And general fediverse news:
!fediverse@lemmy.world
!fediverse@lemmy.ml
Contribute to communities you like even if they’re kinda empty. The important part is to get the conversation moving in a lot of these places, and someone has to start that.
Also remember to play around with different sorting algorithms. If active is getting stale, try hot. If you aren’t seeing enough small communities, try scaled. I also like using Top X Hours, from 6 to 24.
Some of the Scrubs jokes aged badly. I can’t remember any specifically, but there was some anti-gay humor and stuff like that. The show I still appreciated enough to get through a rewatch recently and still mostly enjoyed, but some of the individual jokes were hard to sit through. Wish I could remember one lol.
