  • You assume your proposal is an “easy” solution. The main reason I live here in the first place is because the surrounding cities, that do have amenities and public transport, are much more expensive to live in. Is not that the town I live in is large in area, it’s quite walkable, it simply doesn’t have much.

It also reminds me of a guy I used to know who said he didn’t need a watch. Claiming he didn’t need to know the time that often. But what did he do? He asked everyone around him what the time was instead. Quite often. Oh and he was usually late to class.

Why am I telling you about him? Because it is the same sentiment as “I don’t need a car, if I want to see my friends (and relatives) I simply ask them to travel to me.”

  • Well I do drive electric now but I could not get by without a car. Honestly I would love it if public transport were viable for everyone. In London and Zurich I have experienced public transport that worked. Where I live a 1 hour car journey can mean a 3 or 4 hour trip by public transport and only if you are travelling at the right time of day. Unfortunately I don’t necessarily get to choose when I make some of those trips because it is part of my job. Unfortunately here, public transport is slow, expensive and unreliable here.

I know electric cars don’t solve everything, and maybe this meme is not exactly what I’m responding to, but for a lot of people, public transport is just not a viable alternative.

Like I said I know it’s not going to be a popular sentiment here.

  • I’d call ‘actual adulting’ having responsibility for another’s welfare. Whether a dog, cat or human, they are all varying levels of “if I fuck up, someone else suffers”.

I still don’t feel fully like an adult, but I do feel the responsibility of ensuring there is food on the table and a roof over our heads. My partner is also responsible for these things so it is a little less pressure.

All said I do not feel as adult as I saw my parents when they were my age. They seemed very grown up and very responsible compared to how I feel today. I was 11 when my dad was my age.

“Not everyone has family they can stay with.” No I know that. Which is why I said it’s not easy to go this path.

"Many have shit credit due to health conditions that are not their fault. "

Which is not an argument for " give me your money without looking at my past" it’s an argument for mitigating circumstances to be better considered.

“Credit checks are increasingly used for apartment leases and car insurance.”

This is wrong. A security deposit is the landlords financial guarantee. I also think insurance should be based solely on driving record, not age , gender or where you live.

“Is it entitled for a person to think they should be able to have a place to live?”

If they expect to be lent money for it, no questions asked them it is absolutely the definition of entitled. You are not entitled to a place to live on someone else’s money. It is your responsibility to provide for yourself and your family. I’m all for expanding welfare programmes, help to buy schemes, rent control etc etc. Those things are something we all pay into and provide us with a safety net is bad things happen. Those things should make sure you are able to have a place to live, but don’t expect a bank to lend you 500k to buy a house without some idea of is they can trust you.

Now in saying some of this I find myself in the dirty position of siding with rich banks. I am not intending to do that because I hate that they make shit loads and squirrel it away for themselves, charge me for borrowing when I’m in negative and pay me back very little for using my money when I’m in positive. This is not about that, I’m only interested in what is fair in the isolated transaction of one party pending another money. Wouldn’t you want to know how likely you are too get back your money if you were the lender? Would you lend money to your friends with a gambling problem? Is the current system of credit check fair? Not exactly. It should be enough to be able to demonstrate financial responsibility. I paid rent for 20 years without missing a payment, but it wasn’t enough to demonstrate financial stability or responsibility and that is plain wrong.

  • Ask yourself what winning the game gains for you and what losing costs you. Then ask yourself what behaving like an ass when you win or lose might gain you or cost you. No one will remember you won that particular game in a month except maybe you. It is not going to be something that other people findly remember about you when you aren’t around. However if you act like a ass, they definitely will remember and what you will gain if you repeatedly behave like that is a reputation, and not a good one. Nobody else really cares if you win or lose. It says literally nothing useful about you in day to day life.

What do you prefer to win, a board game or a lasting relationship.

Now that’s said, when you are in the midst of losing and you can feel the tension. Remind yourself what is really at stake as above.

If you start losing and winning graciously you will hopefully come to realise the above naturally.

“I want your money but I don’t want you to see how trustworthy I am. Just give me money”

Seriously how entitled is everyone these days. It is not a human right to borrow money, you are at the mercy of the banks because your are asking them for a favour. If you don’t like that, don’t ask them for money.

You always have the other option. Build savings instead, but then you have to wait for the things you want and you might have to live with family while doing so. I’m not saying this path is easy, but I’m not the one objecting to a lender wanting to know how good or bad I am with money before expecting them to risk theirs.

  • First No elected official is allowed to take money or goods in excess of 50% of the median salary for all workers in the country in total for the entirety of their time in office from any organization or unrelated individual nor sit on the board of any company following office. Any payments to said official totalling over 50% median salary in the 5 years prior to their election and 20 years after leaving office from a single entity must be declared. The state will provide a generous pension to ensure future employment is not a financial necessity.

These measures are intended to allow elected officials to be free from influence.

Second Any change in leadership of a political party immediately triggers a general election. Change in leadership generally means a failure of the manifesto and/or a change in the policies which were presented to the public when the leadership was elected.

Third No advisory referendum shall be conducted without the intention to act upon the outcome and therefore any referenda should only be acted upon with a super majority of 66%. Prior to action following a referendum, the winning side must demonstrate how the result will be acted upon and where negotiation with outside interests is necessary, since the outcome cannot be known at the time of the first referendum the public should be offered a second referendum to decide whether to accept the outcome.

Fourth Politicians shall be held to account for any lies or dishonesty. Burden of proof lies with the politician accused of misconduct to provide evidence for their claims which are in dispute. Therefore evidence provision at the time of any claims is encouraged and can be published to a publicly accessible repository. Punishments can range from fines to removal from office depending on the severity and frequency of misinformation.

Fifth Proportional representation she’ll be enacted to eliminate tactical voting. In addition any changes to the electoral district are subject to scrutiny by a randomly selected jury of 1000 residents in each of the affected areas. Voting by, and identity if the jurors shall be anonymous. The public may request redistricting at any time with a 2 year cool off via a petition meeting a minimum number of 100,000 signatures.

  • Many many people have no choice.

A number of software companies have software which has become industry standard and do not support windows. That means any new employees have been educated and trained in using that software. So to defy that , you are either the odd man out in the company, or the odd company out in the industry.

That causes you disadvantages of interoperability with colleagues or a need to train your new employees with skills that are typically only useful within your own company and delay the return on investment of your new hire which has financial implications.

Wine has come a long way but many industry standard softwares do not play nicely. E.g. Adobe software, autocad, solidworks. If you get it running, you are not guaranteed the next version will work and if your whole team upgrades except you, you might lose the ability to work with their files. Your boss may not be happy if you need to spent x hours or days getting up and running again because you had to upgrade from v21 to v22 and it didn’t work out of the box in wine.

Businesses need and require a different level of support vs home users so that issues can be fixed in a timely and reliable manner. Adding wine into the mix means every software problem now has potential causes not just in the software itself, but also in the wine setup.

So ultimately where no native application exists and no compatible application exists, wine is not yet an acceptable solution for business use except in very fringe cases. So that leaves virtual machines as a solution, but then you are running windows with extra support issues again. So why would you not just run windows.

I offer this answer as the reason windows is and will remain ubiquitous not as my own personal preferences or opinions.

I tried working in Linux for several months but I kept coming up against barriers that cost me time , solely because of my choice to use it and not use windows. When I encountered issues, IT would not and could not help. In the end I deleted my Linux partition because I simply could not work with file formats colleagues were exchanging when working in Linux and I would have to switch to windows. In some cases there were conversations or workarounds but again these typically add work and introduce issues at times.

If you want windows gone, the only way is to convince large software companies to support other operating systems natively or for wine to reach 100% parity with the experience on windows. The former will only happen if there is a financial positive for the companies and the latter will likely never happen, or take a very long time due to windows being a moving target.

  • It is pretty simple. Respect your employees and they will respect you. Respect starts with valuing the employee’s contributions by paying them a fair wage. It continues with treating them well. A way of treating them well might be a point ping table, but that comes on top of a fair wage, not instead of.

A good manager might recognise a hard working team needs a way to relax and gets a pool table or something. The employees are happy and tell their friends they’ve got a pool table at work, everyone is jealous. It seems like the pool table is the reason but it is just a symptom of them being generally treated well.

I’ve been waiting for sync to be ready on lemmy and installed it as soon as it was. I got an ad preferences thingy and thought “fuck it, the guy got sync of the ground for lemmy in just a few weeks” worth £15.99 for the annual sub to ultra IMHO. Been using sync pro on reddit for years of the back of a tiny one of purchase. I figure for the hours I used it, he deserves more than I paid and I’m more than grateful that sync is back.
