  • Define expensive?

Because labor isn’t the main cost of fast food as far as I’m aware. Doubling the wage of laborers saw only modest price changes in places that hiked minimum wage… Despite franchise owners being able to set their own prices.

McDonald’s near me in NYC is more expensive than Alabama, sure - but it’s not double the price. ~$20 for 2 people to have 2 large meals with drinks is eminently reasonable.

  • As a cyclist in NYC the complaint that bikes are weaving through cars is hilarious.

Of course they are. Cars are almost always stuck in traffic while bikes move faster.

I can make my 12ish mile commute in 45 minutes. Until the bridge I spend every mile of that commute passing cars.

That’s all besides the point though: there shouldn’t be personal passenger vehicles in NYC. Business vehicles sure. A few taxis are personal vehicles because of Uber - sure. But there should be 0 street parking and heavy restrictions on where drivers are allowed to go. We need to take back our streets.

  • Shure != Bose, but also I don’t think you can shower in the Shure IEMs. Maybe with a case or something on them.

I use Aftershokz for something like shower listening but those are the opposite of your problem - they’re bone conduction so they do not block any sound.

Also to be clear - my earbuds are wireless in that they just clip to my belt loop with the Bluetooth receiver. So I can have them out of the way but easily available.

  • I know you’re specifically looking for ANC but given the price range have you looked at something like a good quality pair of wired IEMs with a pair of tightly fitted ear tips?

I ride the notoriously loud (94dba) NYC subway with them and it deadens most of the noise.

I used to wear my Shure 215s to sleep no problem. I’ve had them a couple years now and love them.

I’ve got a Qudelix 5K Bluetooth receiver that lets my plug in any wired headphones to it and it’s great. I’ll be replacing the battery here in the next year or two which is a bit fiddly but is at least doable - unlike earbuds.

My setup was about $200-$250 total and it’s modular so replacing any part of it is cheaper.

  • I’m not positive I’m understanding your term naturalistic but no neuroscientist would say “we are just neurons”. Similarly no neuroscientist would deny that neurons are a fundamental part of consciousness and thought.

You have plenty of complex chemical processes interacting with your brain constantly - the neurons there aren’t all of who you are.

But without the neurons there: you aren’t anyone anymore. You cease to live. Destroying some of those neurons will change you fundamentally.

    There’s no disputing this.
