  • Slightly being the key word. I used to think we’d be fine after boomers die and millenials take over (sorry Gen X yes we always forget you) but then realized there are plenty of terrible Gen Y and then for a moment Gen Z was going to change labor politics gun control environment gender/sexuality and be super accepting but there’s still a huge proportion who still want to MAGA… we’ll see how bad alpha is

like my nephews say the same racist shit on their discord and valorant as I saw on 4chan 20 years ago and it’s just sad

  • the price difference and, well, its plasticity is unparalleled

nothing else comes even close within several orders of magnitude. the other options listed ITT are complete jokes. you think goods are expensive now because of a few points of inflation? imagine paying a few dollars extra for thick and heavy glass bottles for everything or fancy custom made seaweed mushroom compounds instead of medical grade sterile plastic wrap that costs 2c per football field

  • I want to read more mid 20th century hard SF with this kind of art on the cover where the characters smoke and are mean to women (while lamenting the latter)

Edit: and everyone is sending video telegrams and the internet and social media haven’t been invented and the ultimate fate of the galaxy is a roman-style empire with jealous rogue generals in remote “corners”

  • I’m guessing it’s more of the latter. I really only know about human animals, but we probably make about 50-100 cancerous cells daily (I’m making up the number). Any one of those can become real Cancer^TM if left alone, but our immune system is so efficient at finding and killing these that cancers really only succeed once they have enough good camouflage to masquerade as normal non cancer cells and fool the immune system until it’s too late. That’s why transplant patients and people with autoimmune diseases are at higher risk of cancer (since they are on immunosuppressants) and boosting the immune system is an effective anti cancer therapy.

That being said honestly I doubt the immune system is hunting down tiny mutations in eggs/sperm or committing entire animal-level suicide after they are successfully fertilized but it’s just that it’s a harsh environment and they are perfectly evolved to survive there. Any deviation from that perfect form is just so much less fit for survival that their genes never get passed on. And other animals will eventually just become crabs. Like sharks. Every ocean will evolve crabs and sharks.

I don’t. Altavista was OK, I liked Northern Lights a lot, but I hated having to use Lycos, Dogpile, Ask Jeeves, hot something, etc. just to get the basic answers to things and even then whatever geocities webring I stumbled upon (I do miss that service) was probably wrong. Wikipedia either didn’t exist or was really terrible back then too.

Forums were cool, IRC, usenet, but modern search engines, Web 2.0, and bit torrent made life soooo much easier. I never want to have to use a download manager for ftp/http downloads again. RSS was cool but a little later. Reddit style nested threads are also a game changer.
