yeah I see what you mean. you’d have to replace all 12 hour clocks world-wide though - and then accept that it would take generations for people to adapt. it’d probably never going to happen.

it seems like one of the key defining principals of the fediverse is platform evolution - mastodon, bluesky, and lemmy are just going to be footnotes in history.

i enjoy competition but not “organized” competition - unless you count war/wargaming. that’s super neat.

why? our tech level is almost to the point where we really wont need fast food or retail workers - not in the numbers that exist now, anyway. at best, you might have such a program for maybe 10 years - and it’d be seen as violating intrinsic rights. mandatory military service in 1st world nations is largely unneeded anyway, they have a lot of volunteers - mostly from the same lower economic bracket that retail workers come from, curiously enough.

for the fast food chains it’ll be AI running the drive through and maybe one person loading various pre-cooked/flash-frozen items into the machines that will do the cooking/re-heating - and perhaps a manager but they’ll be more of a district manager overseeing many stores in their area, and honestly even that sort of thing is easily replaceable by software.

clothing stores are already on their way out, have you been to a mall recently? online shopping is far easier to maintain and to participate in, only higher-end clothiers and bespoke tailoring establishments will still have in-person retail workers, but only because old money folks are slower to adopt changes (they can afford to wait, you see).

eh, I disagree. a personal vehicle can (generally doesnt because traffic is a thing) provide a sense of freedom. there’s a certain romantic appeal to having your own vehicle and there’s certainly freedom in an open road - if you ignore the fact you’re roped into buying fuel and general maintenance for said vehicle. the only way I can see fear being a factor would be the “can I afford the next major expense”.

mass transit is more efficient, cant really argue against that, but it’s in no way individualized or even customizable in any way at a personal level. you also have to base your entire schedule around the bus/train and then when it doesnt show up on time (or show up at all) you’re basically fucked. a personal vehicle has none of those failings. as a matter of fact, in many places in America you’re required to own your own vehicle because the cities are few and far between… existing without owning a vehicle is akin to being stranded on a deserted island - you’re cut off from the rest of the world. most folks dont like being physically cut off from society - preventing it isnt selfishness, it’s being prepared

never really got the draw to organized sports - feels like a waste of time to watch.

in regards to that definition then: yeah, I’d say people are, on the whole, more enlightened than they were a century ago. the scientific method is more thoroughly accepted/baked in at a societal level, and the mass adoption of digital communication facilitates a greater sense of community… though the resulting communities are often at odds with each other.

30% vinegar is pretty amazing stuff, I use it on my toilet every 6 months or so. really eats away those organic stains. used it for cleaning metal a few times too, it’s a really solid purchase.
