Yes, I could easily configure our Podman containers to auto-update, but given how there have been significant breaking bugs in Lemmy releases before, I think it’s better to not automate it.
Admin on the slrpnk.net Lemmy instance.

Systemd is very useful for managing (rootless) Podman containers.
They are not included. You need to divide the 3.600€ by two main developers and then add up the irregular NLnet payments to that. So as a result it comes to approximately 3000€ for each of the two devs per month (6000€/month total). At least that is my understanding from what is written above.
Here it isn’t so heavy on CPU, but the database eats RAM like crazy. My guess would be that their server is constantly swapping out stuff from RAM due to insufficient surplus RAM and this as a result creates the high CPU load.

You can compile it from source.
Well, it’s not a webfinger ID, as XMPP is not web based, but XMPP IDs have the same form, so if you link the accounts in the background you end up with something that is functionally like that.
ActivityPub and XMPP can use the same ID system just fine. You can reach me on XMPP on the same ID as this Lemmy account.
Looks like a normal, perfectly good road. Sincerely, a European.

Edit: ah, I should read the OP 🤦♂️
Storage expansion options are the one thing mini-pcs are bad for, so not really any great options there.
You could get a m2 to SATA adapter board, but getting the additional drives powered if you don’t have a ATX PSU isn’t fun.
And yes, use USB only for rarely accessed data.
You should get in contact with the people behind: https://loops.video/
The main dev is the one that also does Pixelfed and he needs developer help and also asked for it specifically for Loops.
And like a bar, serving the drinks is the least of your problem… cough moderation cough
It’s written in php Laravel, so it should be somewhat more lightweight than Mastodon, but not massively so.
Mastodon also has a bit of an unjustified bad reputation for that… yes for very small instances it is a resource hog, but it scales reasonably well to larger number of users after that initial bump.
According to the main developer’s mastodon feed, yes.
I think once groups land in Pixelfed and the new app is released on the official app-stores, which will hopefully both happen this month, it is probably the best option if people are used to IG and Facebook.
Neither, its pretty much a single user instance without a relay.
But you are right that the problem is not completely non-existant, but Akkoma does actively pull in more replies etc. than Mastodon seems to do.
Ah, I thought it maybe does since when I use that with my Akkoma instance I (mostly) don’t have that problem. You can pretty easily migrate you account from Mastodon to Akkoma, so maybe that is an option? I hear that such issues are mostly exclusive to Mastodon.
You could try: https://phanpy.social/
They have been talking about how creators want to own their platform and I could imagine that they don’t mind allowing a few such people to migrate off Threads to facilitate that. In the end what matters to them is that the large audience stays on their platform where they can serve them personalized advertisements.
