I mean, the cuter an animal is the more humans want it. Pugs might have health issues, but selective breeding has certainly made them very popular. That is, to the animals advantage.
Cats lack the genetic diversity and flexibility dogs have.
People in the cat fancy have tried to changes things but for the most part a cat is a cat. Probably just part of being an obligate carnivore.
And dogs geneally make wolf puppy noises.
Barn cats are the natural domestication of cats.

Early domestic dogs were probably ratters, too. The domestication process for both were probably pretty similar.
The biggest difference is that domesitc dogs were then also able to be bred into companion hunters.

Most restaurants are chains and owned by a small handful of corporations and mega-franchisees. Their shareholders make a lot of money.
Most small businesses (restaurants or otherwise) go broke because they are undercapitalized or otherwise mismanaged.
It takes money to make money.
And If you want to make the jump from wage earner to small business owner, making higher wages helps a lot.
Higher wages means the next generation of small businesses are more successful. More successful small businesses create more competition and keep prices lower for consumers.
I disagree that the culture currents have changed that fast.
If the economy recovered and gave much better prospects for young people and housing was cheaper, they’d still be expected to move out on their own.
I think people understand the realities of our current situation, but usually multigenerational housing is still not considered an ideal situation.
