Unfortunately it inevitable. If a publicly traded company exists, it will have to extract more and more and more until this kind of rent-seeking model happens. And if a company is private, it will eventually go public. And even if you truly believe in a company’s owner to not sell out, eventually they will die and the company will go public or get sold. Eventually, money always wins.

It’s always a matter of degrees. The bigger the injustice, the more violence is justified to rectify it. It is in the disproportionality, in my view, where the problem arises.
Never forget that humans are just barely evolved apes. Sometimes a swift knock to the head is required to activate those neural pathways to discourage anti-social behavior. Not always, but also not never. Claiming otherwise is just self-aggrandizing moralization that people use to make themselves sound and feel superior.
This has amused me. Thank you for the amusement.
their pumps were constantly vandalized
good. as they should be.
I think we just have to accept that marketing has to dumb down and generalize for the mass market.
So they’re using our data and also getting paid for it
Yeah? Isn’t that the point of paying for a music service? I pay, they give me access to music and curate it in a way that would be enjoyable to me. How could they do that without some information about me? This is a prime example of what a company should use your data for.
This logic is really sending me, man.
If it’s a neural network doing it, then that’s fine.
lighten up man
I have put complete faith in Google maps in poor lighting before
And that is a very unsafe way to operate a two ton motor vehicle. As the driver, it is your responsibility to operate your vehicle safely. If you can’t operate it safely in the given conditions, you are obligated to not operate it. If lighting conditions are so poor, and your vehicles illumination is insufficient, stop driving.
We test drivers and license them to make sure they know not only the rules of the road but safety measures. Putting “conplete faith” in an automated system is the very definition or irresponsible driving and should be grounds to lose ones license.
It was corrupted in much the same way the stock market was corrupted. That whole thing is mostly speculative gambling now, when it was supposed to about profit sharing with companies that were either sound investments currently with steady profits or up-and-coming companies that had potential. Now it’s just casino gambling betting on prices that are completely divorced from reality that expects infinite growth of made up value.
It wasn’t altruistic per se, but that doesn’t make it nefarious, either. At it’s core, it was just a network connectivity design that resists node failure. It was us that used that foundation to create a virtual space that everyone could participate in. We now have outsized bad actors like Google and Microsoft and Amazon and alphabet agencies that are trying to influence that virtual space, but its culture was built by us.
Didn’t say it would all be good. Just too good to pass up.
These things will be insanely useful as they improve. I’ve always found Google’s assistant fairly useful, even just answering basic searchable questions and performing basic tasks. The LLMs that are available now have a way better grasp on natural language and thus a much better ability ability to comply with your requests.
The ability to talk to your home assistant like you would a secretary instead of a computer will be a game changer. There comes a point for (almost) everyone where convenience and utility will outweigh the privacy concerns and inertia required to get started. I think having a personal secretary that has a great understanding of your commands and an understanding of your needs and the ability to interact with your online services for you in complex ways is going to check that box.
we can hope, tho. imagine the chaos.
From all the war stories you see online, they don’t have that much to lose.
Don’t know. As long as it is open source, I’m not sure it would matter. Eventually one would win out with the community.
It would have to be a defined standard. I imagine it not so much as a script that runs, but rather a description of fields and weights. I guess there might be some computation involved, but I think a standard could be devised that there would minimize the security risk.
Just like we drew it up.
