  • a viable alternative

It’s already a viable alternative. I can tell because I’m only here and not there anymore and lack nothing

we need to convince more Redditors to switch over by mentioning Lemmy in the right threads

This is just the worst idea. First off, it would require me to have a reddit account, which I nuked. Second, it’d require me to go to reddit and there’s no more ingress points that won’t rape my eyes. And finally, I’m not using my time and energy proselytizing just to accelerate another tragedy of the commons.

  • Performance of OSMand is actually great on mid-level SOCs I usually get. Anything with snapdragon 6xx or more and performance is a non-issue for me, especially since it has a new opengl2 renderer. Also, it uses very, very little battery navigating me with voice (so screen off) along a pre-defined GPX on locally downloaded maps in airplane mode. And the simplicity of the interface is a downside once you spend a few hours tinkering with OSMand and get used to all it can do.

  • I still wouldn’t use it, but Elon should buy it so he can more convincingly posture a saviour of independent social media. Just drop the tracking, sell square ads on the sidebar based on content only, open up api for all sorts of uses and make rif is ridiculous fun for reddit the official client. Give it to five geeks to maintain and call it a public service. What’s a bit more down the drain? It’s all gonna go Midas anyways. At least that would be a win for the internets

  • You’re not going anywhere.

Why? I dropped maps completely as soon as they started enshittifying it with elements I don’t use that can’t be removed from the UI; now I use only OSMand. I dumped Chrome when they announced manifest v3 and use Firefox. I dropped Google Play store when they made it difficult to see the exact version and it turns out f-droid has everything I need. I also dumped gmail for k9; their sms client for an open source one; I removed their Youtube client and use Newpipe. I always search with Ecosia or DDG before trying google.
