Are you sure about Antarctica? I wouldn’t be surprised if emperor penguins measured distance in feet and flippers.

Not ibm. You might be thinking of Bell: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakup_of_the_Bell_System
I’m going to second this: a few pairs of Crocs, each placed at a strategic exit and going outside for a few minutes is no inconvenience at all anymore. For anything that takes longer than that, I put on suitable footwear for whatever I’ll be doing.
Chimps also have sex for fun, I don’t know about frequency. What sets bonobos apart from chimps and humans is that they use sex for conflict resolution. If humans or chimps have a territorial dispute, then it’s going to lead to a violent war. If bonobos have a territorial dispute, then they usually sex it out (somehow, I don’t know how they decide who comes out on top, if someone has to come out on top that is, maybe post nut clarity is enough to convince everyone that it’s not worth the fuzz).
I only know one instance in human history where (maybe) something similar happened: Richard Lionheart and Philip of France.
Well, this finally explains how bonobos came to be. These 2 taught conflict resolution through the power of love to the wrong ancestors.
I’m not using it anymore, I just tested it to see if I could propose it as a substitute. In my testing I tried both open and ms formats: I started with old excel files which didn’t work well, so then I tried open format files that were build up from a clean slate state, with the data imported from CSV files. After that didn’t perform satisfactory either, I turned to the internet. After searching for the major issue that I encountered (slow in a large sheet), I came to the conclusion that calc could not be a full substitute for excell, so I never proposed it and we’re still using ms office to this day.
I’m just going to copypaste some other people’s thoughts with which I agree, saving me a bit of time:
*"If you work at a large company for a while you’ll encounter a class of user that Calc doesn’t really address. They’re like super-specialists. They often have a deep knowledge of Excel, but are otherwise completely computer illiterate. They also work with large datasets and specific models. Calc isn’t a replacement for them. Not just on a feature level, but on an accessibility level.
Look for Excel resources. Classes, books, articles, howtos, everywhere. Do the same for Calc and you’ll struggle a lot more. There is stuff there, but it just isn’t nearly as professional and rich. There is no great way to transition Excel users to Calc users and have them still be as productive.
In the Linux world, when we get those style of work-loads we generally put aside Calc / Excel as a tool and begin looking at programming languages (e.g., Python, Matlab). I feel like this somewhat handicaps our ability to reach those users.
for basic use though, it’s perfectly acceptable. I just wouldn’t consider it a poweruser tool, and those power users are what make Office a multibillion dollar product for MS."*
*"Sadly, it’s just not there in book.
The only time I try to use LOCALC is when I have a few hundreds/thousands of rows of formatted values to sort into a simple graph and performance is just abysmal.
I just tried again earlier this day and though most daily features are there for your regular user, all my “casual” uses of it ended up underlining the severe performance problems.
Maybe my uses are far more corner case than I believe…"*

Those are ideological reasons though and me calling them idealogical does not mean that I dismiss them as valid reasons. Idealogy in itself is not a bad thing and it should certainly have a part in decision making.
Where we differ in opinion is in which should take priority: I’m of the opinion that practicality should trump ideology (in this case), while you find the idealogical reasons more important.
The money that will be saved is peanuts compared to the cost of the workers. Loss of productivity through the implementation of bad tools can be very costly. The various Microsoft Office programs also offer the possibility to add bespoke features. Microsoft Office does not leak data unless you chose to let it do so, at least in the eu.
Optimizations that might happen once a program with unacceptable performance is in a production environment, are generally optimizations that never happen. I’ve never seen a program make such a turnaround, it’s wishful thinking without a basis in reality.
This thing really is set up for failure. I’m not against organisations moving away from products from large monopolistic companies, rather the opposite, I’m very much in favor. But if the move is done in such a way that it’s bound to fail and then cement itself into people’s mind as a bad thing, then it has accomplished the opposite of what it has set out to do. Right now Linux is ready for widespread adoption in environments where productivity matters, but in my experience libre office is not.
The last time I tried it, which is now a few years ago, LibreOffice Calc was substantially slower than Excell for larger spreadsheets. Like a difference between night and day, it was no acceptable substitute if productivity was a concern, which it usually is.
Imo a big swoop change like this, which is done for ideological reasons, but without practical considerations, is doomed to fail and leave a lasting bad impression in peoples’ minds. Imo it would have been far better to only drop windows 10/11 for a familiar looking Linux distro, while continuing to use Microsoft Office.
This depends on the game and the viewing distance + screen size for me. 30 fps in a tbs game like civilization is perfectly fine for me, but too slow for an rts like total war. 60 fps in total war works for me on the big screen living room tv, but I find it too slow on a desktop computer screen. I expect shooters with jumping and fast turns to benefit even more from faster fps than my rts games, but it’s been years since I played one.
Lemmy.world and lemmy.ml are still federated. You might have it confused with the defederation from hexbear and lemmygrad (both autocratic loving tankies, who are also extremely obnoxious).
I wasn’t sure before and I wanted to look it up, that’s why I didn’t reply earlier.
https://lemmy.world/instances The blocked instances are at the bottom.
Seems like a pretty objective open minded comment to me, I wonder what they replied to.
I looked up rule 1 if lemmy.ml: No bigotry - including racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, or xenophobia. Code of Conduct.
The code of conduct is that of Lemmy org, I never read it till now and I’m very disappointed by the next part: “Remarks that moderators find inappropriate, whether listed in the code of conduct or not, are also not allowed.”. Basically total mod discretion, so by extension, “rule 1” of lemmy.ml also boils down to total mod discretion.
According to the code of conduct, there’s also supposed to be first warnings, temporary bans and the chance for repeals according to the code of conduct. Which does sound nice, but I wonder if it’s also done in practice in some Lemmy communities. It seems pretty hard to provide a system for this that is not based on happenstance. Does anyone have experience with this?
This does not surprise me one bit from r worldnews. When I last used that sub (2021? Not sure actually), mod abuse was already rampant and correcting popular blatant misinformation, would get you voted down massively, even when you provided a solid source and explanation. A truly rotten sub. Animetitties (seriously) was a far better sub for following and discussing world news. At a certain point, there will have been no active mods with any integrity left in r worldnews and I suspect that that point was years ago. The whole reddit moderation system does seem fundamentally flawed, which was especially noticeable in the default subs.
I think it’s grandparents indeed. I also like how they’ve included 2 dogs (I think, the picture is a bit grainy).
I thought that you were on to something and did a quick google search: the variation is apparently only 0.5%. And a variation that big is only found when comparing a measurement on the poles (heavier) vs the equator (lighter) and I think it unlikely that this pasta was made on Antarctica. So nope, it’s not the reason, they really do owe the op 2 grams of pasta.
These kittens don’t look liquid enough, so probably not sedated.
That you immediately jump to that negative conclusion, does indicate that there is a problem with you, but you can do something about it: be less bitter.
If Semmelweis’ s theories were correct, it would have meant that many deaths of their patients would have been easily avoidable. So those other doctors could either ridicule the theory and continue living + practicing in ignorance, or accept the theory and also accept that they had (unknowingly) caused the deaths of many of their patients.
I’m not surprised that they chose the route of ridicule. I’m also not surprised that 20 or 30 years later, when the assistants of the old doctors had become the new generation of doctors, that the theory was then more easily accepted.
Until you really really need to go hard, then it’s clothes off again.
A few years back I had something clogging up my intestines (no clue what) on the night that I was going to take a 3 hour flight to a wedding, so no lying down and way too much sitting in a cramped position for a too long time. I never felt more constipated as after I arrived and could finally stretch again.
So about 2 hours later when I could feel that it was nearly time, I evacuated to the furthest possible bathroom (I didn’t want to be a party pooper), lost all clothing except my socks and spend 30 minutes in agony, explosively shitting away, while covered in sweat and bracing myself against the walls.
All of which to say, is that you might think that you have left your shirtless days behind, but when shit really hits the fan, then you won’t be able to stop yourself from going back to your old habits.
Yeah, earth in Dutch is “aarde” and in German it’s “erde”, which both sound related to “earth”.
However, it originally must have meant soil/dirt/land, long before those humans were even aware of the concept of planets. So who was the first to call Earth after earth or Terre after terre? Probably the first persons to figure out that they were living on a planet is my guess, it makes sense to name something after the part that you can see imo.
